Experiencing an Intimate Partner’s Breast Cancer: Attachment, Caregiving, and Burden in Men

Abstract: This study highlighted the importance of addressing adult attachment dispositions and caregiving to understanding the relational processes implicated in caregiver burden. The results support the conclusion that men's adult attachment orientations and caregiving patterns toward their female partners with breast cancer are relevant contributors to men's perceptions of caregiver burden.

“…Informal family caregivers also often experience high caregiver burden, defined as a caregiver's perception that his/her physical health, psychological well‐being, social life, and/or financial status are affected by a family member's or patient's illness . The principal caregivers of breast cancer survivors tend to experience some degree of caregiver burden, which is a relevant predictor of depression and anxiety . Particularly, Chinese caregivers showed moderate caregiver burden, which was influenced by family economic status, anxiety, and depression .…”

“…Az emlőrákos nők nagy százaléka említi azon félelmeit, hogy a betegséggel járó testi változások miatt esetleg elhagyja őket a partnerük, majd ebből fakadóan alacsonyabb önértékelésről, rosszabb mentális és testi egészségről, partnerkapcsolati és szexuális eredetű nehéz ségekről számolnak be. A vizsgálati eredmények alapján elmondhatjuk, hogy azok a személyek bíznak kevésbé párkapcsolatukban, akiknek kötődési stílusa bizonytalan [29][30][31]. Emlőrákosok alkalmazkodási nehéz ségeit kívánta feltárni az a kutatás, amelyben a bizonytalan kötődés elkerülő és szorongó aldimenzióinak az életminőséggel való kapcsolatát vizsgálták.…”

“…Women involved in a romantic relationship usually identify their partners as their main source of support . Partners, however, may not always respond in a helpful and supportive way because they have to simultaneously deal with their own levels of psychological distress and difficulties in marital relationship . Both patients and partners experience very similar reactions to BC diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, fear, and decreased quality of life …”
