Experiential Learning in the Energy Based Classroom

Abstract: Engineering technology students revel in enhanced learning experiences that include the use of hands-on methods to teach the real-world usage of the tech-nical material. These learning experiences increase applied knowledge and retention in these students and others in related STEM fields. Using research-based learning theory in a project-based and team-based learning environment, the course developers transformed the learning experience from sterile lecture type courses to interactive experiences that enhance… Show more

“…More generally, as noted in the introduction, educators agree that student learning is enhanced by incorporating lab experiments [1, and reference therein] and hands-on activities [2][3][4]. Therefore, it is not surprising that hands-on student responses to a Likert scale, their qualitative opinions, and their performance on the lab assignment, the latter graded by the instructor, documented that the objective of the laboratory assignment was achieved, which was to demonstrate, using a dispersivity laboratory, that student learning was enhanced over merely reading about dispersion or attending a lecture about it.…”

“…Many educators agree that student learning is enhanced by incorporating laboratory experiments [1, and reference therein] and hands-on activities [2][3][4]. Herein a laboratory exercise on dispersivity is described that uses physical groundwater flow models for engineering and geoscience university students -both hands-on and online students.…”

“…The only program and method that is effective to increase students' motivation and activity in learning has been identified as project based learning that allows it to be applied in engineering education [28]. Why project based learning, because it helps students in active learning [29], [30], students can work together [31], [32], communicate in providing learning experiences in groups [33], [34], and have an impact on improvement of students' social and emotional control in learning [35]. After carrying out learning activities using project based learning, students need to be evaluated to see the results of the learning process academic achievements.…”

“…While the former is provided in the company and is closely linked to work activities, upgrading of qualifications is usually carried out in a formal educational system [29]. The employee who participates in such an educational programme achieves a higher level of education and an officially authorised certificate [30].…”
