Experimental study of dispersion characteristics for a series of microstructured fibers for customized supercontinuum generation

Abstract: We demonstrate an experimental study of the chromatic dispersion properties for a series of microstructured fibers (MSFs) dedicated for a supercontinuum generation. With white-light interferometry application we analyze experimentally how the small variations of structural parameters, i.e. an air-hole diameter and a lattice constant, influence dispersion characteristics in different groups of MSFs. Our study provides useful information on how to design the fiber which is less sensitive to the fabrication imper… Show more

“…3). All simulations were provided by the Mode Solution® software form Lumerical Solution Inc. Material parameters of a fibre and taper like refractive indices of core and cladding used for simulation, as well as their diameters were chosen from the catalogue of material properties of a standard single−mode fibre SMF28 Corning [36]. For a taper only diameters of core and cladding chan− ged, refractive indices remained unchanged.…”

“…Furthermore, with the development of microstructured fiber technology, it is possible to customize the fiber's properties (e.g. chromatic dispersion [6], [7], sensitivity to pressure [8], strain [9], temperature [10], birefringence [11]), by modifying the fibers internal structural parameters. In addition to a wide variety of optical fibers, sensors that use various measurement methods can also be produced [12], [13].…”

“…The characteristics of MSFs that have led to such interest relate to their geometrical guiding mechanism which differs from the material guiding mechanism of conventional step-index fibers. Due to the geometrical guiding MFSs enable obtaining properties such as the single-mode propagation over very broad wavelength range, very high nonlinearity and the ability to easily engineer their group velocity dispersion 4,5 . Due to the high refractive index contrast between glass and air, along with a freedom in choice of the air holes diameters and arrangement, one can precisely control dispersion behavior and nonlinearity of fibers 6 .…”
