Exploring open search strategies and perceived innovation performance from the perspective of inter‐organizational knowledge flows

Abstract: Based on theories of inter-organizational knowledge flows and organizational learning, we argue that intensively accessing knowledge from a limited number of external channels, i.e., open search depth, can facilitate the innovating company's incremental innovation performance. We also argue that accessing knowledge from a broad range of external channels, i.e., open search breadth, can enhance the innovating firm's radical innovation performance. Using hierarchical regressions to analyze survey data collected … Show more

“…Previous literature has suggested depth and breadth as two important dimensions of external technology acquisition, and a variety of studies examine both depth and breadth simultaneously (Laursen and Salter 2006;Chiang and Hung 2010). However, due to the limitation of the available data, our research could not analyse the effect of the depth of external technology acquisition.…”

“…The application of these two types of external learning in the firm has propelled innovation research, due to the important role that absorptive capability plays in obtaining incremental and radical innovation performance (e.g., Bierly et al, 2009;Lichtenthaler, 2009). Chiang and Hung (2010) argue that intensively accessing knowledge from a limited number of external channels can facilitate the innovating firm's incremental innovation performance, whereas accessing knowledge from a broad range of external channels can enhance the innovating firm's radical innovation performance. Similarly, studies such as that by Subramaniam and Youndt (2005) find that broader horizons with respect to knowledge sources are related to innovation success and radical innovation performance, respectively.…”

“…Technological resources developed externally can be sourced in by, for instance, licensing, merger and acquisitions (M&A), or spillover effects Leiponen & Helfat, 2010). While search depth denotes how intensively and repeatedly a firm exploits external technological resources, search breadth represents how broadly a firm explores various domains of external technologies (Chiang & Hung, 2010). The reason why this study only focuses on the breadth instead of depth is two-fold: (1) Chinese industrial R&D has been left in a lagging position behind those in the Western countries since the 1980s and 1990s (Xue, 1997).…”
