Expression of Endoglin (CD-105) and Microvessel Density in Oral Dysplasia and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Objective: To assess the expression of Endoglin and Microvessel Density in clinically normal oral mucosa of non-tobacco and tobacco habituated patients & also histopathologically confirmed cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients. Materials and Methods:Twenty cases of clinically normal oral mucosa with tobacco habituation in the form of chewing or smoking, 20 histopathologically confirmed cases of OSCC and twelve normal healthy oral mucosal cases without tobacco habituation in any form, served as… Show more

“…This suggests that the angiogenic phenotypic change could occur mainly in OSCC rather than OED. 9 Other authors such as Sathyakumar et al 32 Basnaker et al 33 also studied MVD in samples with NOM, OED and OSCC diagnoses, but used different types of markers for blood vessels. However, it should be noted that most of the studies, independent of the marker used, coincide with the results of this study in relation to the increase in MDV in the transition from NOM to OED to OSCC.…”

“…19,20,22 The quantification of the expression of this protein has been proposed to evaluate neoangiogenesis in different types of tumors. 21,23 On the other hand, microvascular density (MVD) is a useful histomorphological parameter to evaluate tumor angiogenesis, which is considered an indicator of tumor growth, and has been correlated with the aggressive behavior of tumors. 17,20,22 The aim of this study was to compare the MVD in OM and dental follicle (DF) based on the expression of CD-105, in an effort to obtain new information that may contribute to understand the possible pathogenic mechanisms implicated in the growth of this neoplasm.…”

“…9,10 While studies have been conducted investigating angiogenic markers in OSCC, contradictory results have been reported in the literature. 8,[11][12][13][14][15] The objective of this study was therefore to analyze immunohistochemical expression of CD105 and of vWF in a series of cases of OSCC and determine whether angiogenic indices exhibit correlations with clinicopathological parameters of the tumors. The intention is to thereby contribute to improved understanding of the biological behavior of OSCC and to evaluate the potential role of the proteins tested as markers of tumor progression.…”
