Extraction of red edge optical parameters from hyperion data for estimation of forest leaf area index

Abstract: Abstract-A correlation analysis was conducted between forest leaf area index (LAI) and two red edge parameters: red edge position (REP) and red well position (RWP), extracted from reflectance image retrieved from Hyperion data. Field spectrometer data and LAI measurements were collected within two days after the Earth Observing One satellite passed over the study site in the Patagonia region of Argentina. The two red edge parameters were extracted with four approaches: four-point interpolation, polynomial fitt… Show more

“…The linear interpolation as described by Guyot and Baret [1988] assumes that the reflectance curve at the red-edge can be simplified to a straight line centered around a midpoint between the reflectance in the NIR at about 780 nm and the reflectance of chlorophyll absorption feature about 670 nm. The reflectance and wavelength of REP at the inflection point is estimated based on a linear interpolation with the aid of reflectance values at 700 and 740 nm as the detail reported in [Guyot et al, 1992;Carter, 1994;Clevers et al, 2001;Pu et al, 2003]. …”

“…Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (Rouse et al 1973) and two vegetation indices utilizing the 'red edge', Red edge Vegetation Stress Index (RVSI) (Merton and Huntington 1999), and Red Edge Position (REP) index (Ruiliang et al 2003) were calculated using the CASI II imagery. These indices were used to detect stressed or anomalous vegetation on the levee.…”

“…This condition is called a 'blue shift' (Merton 1998). When a plant is mature and healthy with high chlorophyll content and high LAI, the red edge position usually shifts toward the longer wavelengths (Ruiliang et al 2003). This condition is called a 'red shift' (Merton 1998).…”

“…The relationship between LAI and red-edge bands has been established in several studies. 18,29,30 Generally, the value of a spectral band or region in estimating LAI depends on the vegetation status. For instance, at the senescence, the amount of chlorophyll drops, thus increasing the radiation of NIR and SWIR spectral bands and their contribution in modelling biochemical or biophysical parameters.…”
