Extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF‐EMF) reduces oxidative stress and improves functional and psychological status in ischemic stroke patients

Abstract: As a result of ischaemia/reperfusion, massive generation of reactive oxygen species occurs, followed by decreased activity of antioxidant enzymes. Extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) can modulate oxidative stress, but there are no clinical antioxidant studies in brain stroke patients. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of ELF-EMF on clinical and antioxidant status in post-stroke patients. Fifty-seven patients were divided into two groups: ELF-EMF and non-ELF-EMF. Both group… Show more

“…Elevated SOD and CAT activities after surgery correlate with improved degrees of physical and mental disability based on the clinical scales used in research (the ADL, the MMSE, and the GDS). 37 A high level of oxidative stress is the cause of complications after stroke and, according to our research as well, it significantly affects the progress of the patient's rehabilitation process. 36,37 In our study, we determined the correlation between the level of markers of protein damage and the degree of clinical effects in patients rehabilitated by EMF.…”

“…A pulsed magnetic field was observed to have a role in wound healing by increasing perfusion and vascularization (Pan et al, 2013) and by increasing endogenous fibroblast growth factor release (Callaghan et al, 2008). For the treatment of ischemic injury, the application of a pulsed and static magnetic field was documented to suppress the oxidative stress and thereby be a possible candidate for the treatment of myocardial (Ma et al, 2016), hindlimb (Pan et al, 2013), and ischemic injuries and the rehabilitation of stroke patients (Cichoń et al, 2017).…”

“…Recently, the use of a pulsed magnetic field was suggested to have a role in prevention or treatment of hindlimb (Pan et al, 2013) and myocardial (Ma et al, 2016) I/R injuries. In addition, the application of ELF-MF effectively improved the functional and physiological status of ischemic stroke patients (Cichoń et al, 2017).…”

“…Therefore, much attention should be paid to the recently discovered 'Functional-vegetative system of a human' (FvS) [12], which has proved the biophysical reality of traditional 'acupuncture channels' as well as their direct relation to the vegetative homeostasis and, in addition, requires defining of its place in the classical physiological system [13,14]. low-frequency magnetotherapy (MT) is widely used in modern physiotherapeutic practice using the magnetic component of lowfrequency electromagnetic fields [15][16][17]. Mt has an impressively wide range of indications (anti-inflammatory, anti-oedematous, trophic, hypocoagulant, vasoactive, anaesthetic, stimulating reparative processes and immuno-modelling) [18][19][20].…”
