Eyes-Closed Resting EEG Predicts the Learning of Alpha Down-Regulation in Neurofeedback Training

Abstract: Neurofeedback training, which enables the trainee to learn self-control of the EEG activity of interest based on online feedback, has demonstrated benefits on cognitive and behavioral performance. Nevertheless, as a core mechanism of neurofeedback, learning of EEG regulation (i.e., EEG learning) has not been well understood. Moreover, a substantial number of non-learners who fail to achieve successful EEG learning have often been reported. This study investigated the EEG learning in alpha down-regulation neuro… Show more

“…Whereas another prominent candidate was β-band of IC11, this component might have been selected as an alternative. As in convention, α-band oscillations elicited from parietal regions typically reflect human arousal [22][23][24]. Our results would suggest that α-band activities with potential sources around the midline part of the brain (cingulate cortex) may reflect arousal.…”

“…Several variations of neurofeedback methods exist; some apply to visualize one's neural state by using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) for training and therapeutic purposes [20,21]. BCI with electroencephalography (EEG) has also been widely employed to detect a locus of attention with the P300 component [18,19] or as a means to assess conscious level with α-waves [22][23][24], and so forth. These classical models typically acquire data from one or a few electrode channels and focus only on a specific frequency range of interest.…”

“…If these 6 participants were removed from consideration, the observed improvement rates in positive affect or non-stress score would have increased to nearly 90%. Evidence also exists in the literature that some subjects do not seem to be able to learn brainwave self-regulation, as nearly one-third could not create alpha down-regulation (Nan et al, 2018).…”

“…In the alpha-amplitude upregulation protocol, progressive session-to-session increases in alpha amplitude during the NFB sessions were reported in several studies (Zoefel et al, 2011;López-Larraz et al, 2012;Nan et al, 2013;Wan et al, 2014;Bobby and Prakash, 2017;Naas et al, 2019). Progressive increases in the ability to manipulate the alpha-band dynamics relative to the NFB protocol have been also observed in alpha-downregulation protocols (Wan et al, 2016;Nan et al, 2018Nan et al, , 2020. To the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated session-to-session online changes in the alpha-band responsiveness relative to multiple sessions of alpha tACS.…”
