Fabrication of Tunable, Stable, and Predictable Superhydrophobic Coatings on Foam Ceramic Materials

Abstract: Superhydrophobic foam ceramic materials can be used as distillation column internals, and surface wettability has a remarkable influence on column trays. There are no existing methods for industrial fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces on foam ceramic materials. This paper presents a facile method for fabricating stable superhydrophobic or hydrophobic coatings on the outside and inside of foam SiC materials with submicrometer silica particles, for dip-coating, and alkylchlorosilane, for surface reaction. “…Surface modification is a common method to control the surface wettability of a solid substrate. , The surface-modified stainless steel wire mesh (SSM) was prepared by using a spraying method . For the substrate of the nonsurface-modified stainless steel wire mesh (NSM), the water contact angle (θ*) was 70.6 ± 2.3° (denoted as α-70°).…”

“…Regarding typical gas–liquid contacting devices, namely, perforated trays, some research has been conducted to explore the contact angle effect based on foam SiC column trays and Janus sieve trays in our research group . The results show that a higher contact angle leads to a lesser pressure drop, higher weeping rate, and better gas distribution.…”

“…eir experimental research suggests using nanostructured zirconia as a potentially robust alternative material for the construction of the internal trim components of petrochemical valves. Li et al [26,27] examined the hydrodynamic performances and mass transfer efficiency of a SiC foam monolithic tray. e research results indicate that the hydrodynamics and mass transfer performances of the foam monolithic tray meet the requirements for the mass transfer of elements in the distillation column, which thus has higher operation flexibility and significantly reduces capital costs at the industrial scale.…”
