Face Mask Designs following Novel Coronavirus

Abstract: Doctors need to wear complete protective equipment when large numbers of patients flood into the emergency room. Taiwan has so far managed to prevent a large scale community outbreak, city forces wearing face masks on public transportation, and keep social distancing to stem the virus from spreading. The protective device may be contaminated and must be replaced. In the situation of limited resources, how to take care of the  physiological needs of the doctor without increasing the chance of contamination duri… Show more

“…Options for PPE have been explored ranging from entirely 3d printed plastic masks to adaptations of existing CPR masks with strap and filter for use by the healthcare worker. [11][12][13][14] The pandemic brought forward a culture of novel collaboration and willingness to explore innovation with non-traditional partners. Novel design and manufacture of reusable mask respirators represented one output of this collaboration in our hospital.…”

“…Advanced facemasks such as N95 respirators and other novel designs with improved filtering materials are expected to be much more effective, but high costs will price out the average consumer. Creative prototypes of masks were put forward from various parts of the globe during this Covid-19 pandemic, concentrating on single and multi-use respirators using different materials [ 6 ]. For example, multi-layer cloth masks prevent virus transmission to respiratory patients from infected individuals and improve the filtration efficiency; furthermore, methods of ultraviolet and heat application for sterilising respirators have been investigated by other researchers [ 22 ].…”

“…With high demand for masks in pandemic situations, there has been a rise in Homemade/Do It Yourself (DIY) masks, that are made of simple cloth and are easy to fabricate (Chao, 2020;O Kelly et al, 2021). Many of these masks often incorporate adjustability to account for the variation in facial structure of the users.…”

“…Many of these masks often incorporate adjustability to account for the variation in facial structure of the users. Many of such masks imitate the surgical masks, which rely on securing the mask to the user's ears and adjustability is usually provided with the help of adjustable behind-the-ear straps (Chao, 2020). However, this solution may not be able to entirely counter the effect of variation in multiple facial landmarks and could lead to a reduced fit, even with adjustability.…”
