Factors Affecting the Outcome of Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy in Urinary Stone Treatment

Abstract: This study revealed that ESWL can treat renal and ureteric stones successfully with an inverse association between outcome and predictors such as stone size and density, SSD, and stent presence. These factors can help us in improving patient selection and ensure better results at lower cost.

“…Concerning the sociodemographic factors, age appeared to have no impact on the outcome of ESWL. Similar results were reported in Oman [20]. Previous studies conducted by Lee et al [21] found that there were no significant differences between men and women patients concerning the success of ESWL, which is in line with our current findings.…”

“…Location of stone within the different parts of the kidney may alter the skin to stone distance especially when associated with high. Two studies carried out in Egypt [7], and Oman [20] indicated that the success rate of ESWL decreased significantly when the stone location was in lower calyceal. Dede et al [13] reported that the position of stone (right or lift kidney) was not related to the rate of SF which is in line to our findings.…”

“…In a study evaluating 235 adult patients treated with SWL, gender was reported as a predicting factor for SWL success. In this study, the rate of success of SWL in men was 82.4% and 66% in women (8). In a retrospective study of 145 patients, age, gender and stone location were not statistically significant in predicting SWL success (10).…”

“…The effect of the age factor on SWL success is controversial. In a few studies, the age factor was found to be important in predicting SWL success (8). In a study evaluating 3023 patients treated with SWL, stone free rates were reported to be significantly lower in the elderly patient group (9).…”
