Factors influencing pre-hospital care time intervals in Iran: a qualitative study

Abstract: Abstract:Background:Pre-hospital time management provides better access to victims of road traffic crashes (RTCs) and can help minimize preventable deaths, injuries and disabilities. While most studies have been focused on measuring various time intervals in the pre-hospital phase, to our best knowledge there is no study exploring the barriers and facilitators that affects these various intervals qualitatively. The present study aimed to explore factors affecting various time intervals relating to road traffic… Show more

“…Previous studies indicated that in the current injury data collection systems in Iran, deaths occurring at the injury scene, deaths occurring after leaving the emergency department (ED) for an operating ward, or following hospital discharge are not registered at ED of hospitals. 33 , 34 , 35 The same is true about injury patients who receive care at the scene of injury and do not attend an ED for further medical treatment. 33 It is estimated that the latter group forms 30% of unintentional injuries in Iran.…”

“…Two other studies in Iran also mentioned urban traffic as one of the obstacles to relief operations. 46 , 48 The gathering and involvement of members of the public at the fire scenes is one of the barriers to the firefighting and emergency pre-hospital medical care. Volunteers in these cases can be better managed by relief forces and police and their ability and capacity can then be used to assist and reduce casualties.…”

“…This highlights the importance of using effective methods to reduce time intervals. Although, there are several descriptive quantitative and qualitative studies on time intervals, which has focused on describing the phenomenon of times [ 6 , 14 ], so far, to our best knowledge, no report has been presented on the potential effect of the PHTLS program on the on-scene time interval reduction. Therefore, with a different perspective, this study aims to answer whether the PHTLS training program is effective in reducing the time of presence in the pre-hospital emergency on-scene time interval.…”
