Factors influencing the rooting of peach GF677 (peach x almond hybrid) hardwood cuttings in a growth chamber

Abstract: In Greece, GF677 (peach × almond hybrid) peach rootstock is widely used where replant diseases are a problem. In this study, the influence of orientation, rooting substrate, wounding, and jar environment on the rooting success of GF677 hardwood cuttings was examined. The best rooting was achieved by vertical positioning of the cuttings and the lowest by oblique and horizontal positions. The cutting lengths of 20 and 30 cm were better than 10 cm. Perlite was the best substrate for rooting, whereas cuttings in p… Show more

“…Tsipouridis et al [25] studied on five rooting substrates (perlite (1-5 mm), peat, perlite + peat (50:50 %), sand and perlite (covered cuttings were additionally enclosed in a polyethylene bag)) and found rooting the 50:50 peats perlite mixtures gave a reasonable amount.…”

“…Preparation of rooting substrate: Rooting substrate was prepared from perlite (Tsipouridis et al, 2005), 7.5 L perlite was put in polyethylene bags and 1.5 L of H 2 O 2 3 % (in tap water) was added instead of water with different pH (5, 7 and 9), to reach 20 % moisture (Tsipouridis and Thomidis, 2004). The pH was adjusted by HCl and NaOH.…”

“…Tsipouridis et al [133] reported that better rooting is achieved by positioning the cuttings vertically rather than obliquely or horizontally. Cutting lengths of 20 and 30 cm are better than 10 cm, and the 'doublesplit' wounding of cuttings increases the rooting percentage by over 29% compared with the nonwounded control.…”
