Faecal calprotectin: a marker of inflammation throughout the intestinal tract

Abstract: Calprotectin levels are elevated in inflammation and cancer but are not helpful in differentiating between these disorders. In our series, calprotectin was not elevated in colonic polyps or adenomata. Calprotectin could be helpful as a screening method in a general gastroenterology population for inflammatory bowel disease and those with carcinoma, as well as assessing and monitoring disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease.

“…In any event, calprotectin has been viewed as a good clinical marker for diagnosis, since there is a tendency for an increase in extracellular calprotectin correlate with the inflammatory state of a disease. [44][45][46] The next important problem is what type of cells contribute to extracellular calprotectin as the source of the factor. To answer this, we studied the course of intracellular and extracellular calprotectin expression of inflammatory cells using a rat peritonitis model.…”

“…Like previous studies of the same design, we did not include patients with GI-associated inflammation or nonmalignant tumors since fecal calprotectin level may increase in these conditions (Summerton et al, 2002;Hoff et al, 2004;Fagerberg et al, 2005). Meanwhile, our findings demonstrated an abnormal distribution of fecal calprotectin level in CRC and gastric cancer patients.…”

“…The findings and the diagnosis in the other 37 patients were not discussed. Though previous studies have shown a good correlation between FC and the degree of inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [7][8][9], it's correlation in this heterogenous group is unknown. The authors allowed a 30-day gap between the capsule study and FC measurement, and while relatively short, it may influence results.…”

“…Unlike the CE scoring indices, several studies have shown an excellent correlation of FC with the severity of mucosal inflammation [7,8]. There are many studies that confirm that FC can differentiate inflammatory from non-inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, including small bowel inflammation [8,9]. Therefore, many consider FC a ''gold standard,'' reliable and highly specific marker of inflammation.…”
