Fair Trade phenomenon – limits of neoclassical and chances of heterodox economics

Abstract: Contemporary research exploring the Fair Trade movement does not provide a clear answer whether the overall impact of Fair Trade is positive or negative and what are the real motives of Fair Trade consumers. In the paper we investigate whether the assumptions of selected heterodox schools (feminist, ecological and humanist) fit better to the reality of the Fair Trade movement than those of the neoclassical theory. Although ‘better fitness’ does not necessarily mean ‘better explanation’, the mismatch with reali… Show more

“…This also confirms that the sexual division of labor by emphasizing sexual differences is a variable that is quite influential in worker productivity. These emerging problems are in line with the findings (Carmody, 1998;Horodecka and Śliwińska, 2019;Lowrey, 2011;Panayotakis, 2013;Horodecka and Śliwińska, 2019;Kerr, 2020;Melkevik, 2017;Reda and Reda, 2018;Vlados, 2019).…”

“…Then supported by research conducted by Sugiharto (2017) in the results of his research stated that the number of business units has a positive and significant effect on labor absorption, meaning that the more the number of business units in the industrial sector in an area, the more labor is needed. However, these findings contradict Marshall's idea that the number of business units is not necessarily directly proportional to labor absorption, because labor is absorbed not based on quantity, but on productivity (Clairmont, 1994;Davis, 2006;Epstein, 2008;Mark, 2010;Melkevik, 2017;Horodecka and Śliwińska, 2019;Solo, 1975;Tǎnǎsescu, 2012).…”

“…There are also other values, not necessarily exactly green values which may lead toward green consumption. Here one may count for instance health, taste, quality, or altruistic values such as helping other people in need (like buying FairTrade - Horodecka & Śliwińska, 2019). Some people decide to buy green for these reasons and not for the preservation of nature (Grunert, Hieke & Wills, 2014).…”
