Fast camera motion estimation for hand-held devices and applications

Abstract: In this paper we present an efficient motion estimation algorithm for camera-enabled handheld devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs. Compared to general camera motion estimation, the estimation of ego-motion of handheld devices presents unique challenges because most devices are limited in resources (processing power, memory and battery). The algorithm must be lightweight so it can be efficiently embedded and run fast enough to produce smooth seamless translation. Our solution includes a multi-resolution sch… Show more

“…A number of authors have examined the possibility of using phone motion to draw alphanumeric characters. Liu et al [14] show examples of Latin and Chinese characters drawn using the ego-motion of a mobile device, although these characters are not recognised or used for control. Kratz and Ballagas [15] propose using a simple set of motions to interact with the external environment through the mobile device.…”

“…However, most of these techniques are only implemented for simple motion pattern estimation, such as pan, tilt, zoom and rotation [5]. Moreover, the performance of these systems is not satisfying enough under severe conditions, such as writing speeds, variation in illumination conditions and so forth [6]- [9].…”
