Fast Falling Weight Deflectometer Method for Condition Assessment of RC Bridges

Abstract: In this paper, the use of Fast Falling Weight Deflectometer (Fast-FWD) is analyzed as a non-destructive and quick test procedure to evaluate the efficiency of short-span bridges. The Fast-FWD is an instrument that can produce a broadband dynamic force up to an impact value of 120 KN: The impact is constant and replicable, providing accurate action measures of bridge stiffness in a truly short period (30 ms). In this paper, a single-span reinforced concrete bridge is investigated, using the Fast-FWD. The consid… Show more

“…To this purpose, Benkelman Beam Deflectometers, lightweight deflectometers [8], and the Falling Weight Deflectometers (FWD) [9,10] were mainly used. Recording vibrations from sensors bonded to or embedded within the pavement was also exploited to derive performance parameters of road structures under different climate and traffic conditions [11,12,13]. Crack propagation and fatigue damage were monitored by means of in situ measures [14] taken through piezoelectric sensors, which are in fact typically used to detect damage in structural components [15].…”

“…An important aspect that affects the seismic performance of existing RC bridges is the presence of corrosion in the structural elements due to carbonation phenomenon which can lead to a reduction of the piers steel reinforcements area [9][10][11][12]. Several Italian RC viaducts were built around 1970's and, consequently, require a series of maintenance interventions to guarantee an adequate safety level [13][14][15]. It is important to highlight that these structures were mainly designed to resist to vertical loads and only limited horizontal actions.…”
