Fast Hue-Preserving Histogram Equalization Methods For Color Image Contrast Enhancement

Abstract: In this work, we formalize a generic fast hue-preserving histogram equalization method based on the RGB color space for image contrast enhancement and two versions of that generic process. The first method estimates a RGB 3D histogram to be equalized using R-red, G-green, and B-blue 1D histograms, while the second method employs RG, RB, and GB 2D histograms. The histogram equalization is performed using shift hue-preserving transformations, avoiding unrealistic colors. Our methods have linear time and space co… Show more

“…Taguchi reviewed color systems and color image enhancement methods, and introduced an improved HSI color space [12]. Menotti et al proposed two fast hue-preserving HE methods based on 1D and 2D histograms of RGB color space for color image contrast enhancement [13]. Pierre et al [14] introduced a variational model for the enhancement of color images, and compared their method with the state-of-the-art methods including Nikolova and Steidl's method [15], which is based on their strict ordering algorithm for exact HS [16].…”

“…This problem motivates the development of contrast‐preserving image dynamic range compression algorithms to preserve image contrast during range compression. To achieve this purpose, several sophisticated algorithms have been proposed in the literature based on Retinex theory [1–4], Bayesian framework [5, 6], tone‐mapping operation [7–10], or non‐linear image enhancement [11–13]. However, these algorithms are computationally expensive without hardware considerations and thus are only suitable for software implementation.…”
