Fatal Hyperthermia in Hot Baths in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract: The authors report the case of a 47-year-old black man with a history of multiple sclerosis who was found dead in a bathtub, head above water, with a body temperature of 105.7 F. Results of a complete autopsy and toxicologic screen were negative. “…Fatal sagittal sinus thrombosis is usually considered in the context of pregnancy and childbirth [341,342], but it may occur in association with other conditions [343][344][345]. Sudden death has been described in patents with multiple sclerosis, either in association with heat [346,347], or in the context of brainstem or other vital area involvement [348]. Occasionally, the first presentation of a central nervous system tumor [349][350][351][352], including colloid cyst of the third ventricle, can be sudden death [353].…”

“…Long periods of time exposed to heat without caregiver's monitoring can produce sunburns, dehydration, heatstroke, and even death. There are reports of deaths produced by heat exposure in assisted living facilities as well as in patient's homes due to impaired self-awareness and failure in supervision [2][3][4]. Lastly, under severe mobility impairment, people can also develop comorbidities related to respiratory and cardiovascular function which should be constantly supervised by caregivers.…”
