Fatigue Behavior of a Nanocomposite under a Fighter Aircraft Spectrum Load Sequence

Abstract: Two different E-glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composite laminates having quasi isotropic [(+45/-45/0/90)2]S layup sequence were fabricated viz., GFRP with neat epoxy matrix (GFRP-neat) and GFRP with modified epoxy matrix (GFRP-nano) containing 9 wt. % of CTBN rubber micro-particles and 10 wt.% of silica nanoparticles. Standard fatigue test specimens were machined from the laminates and end-tabbed. Spectrum fatigue tests under a standard fighter aircraft load spectrum, mini-FALSTAFF, were conducted on b… Show more

“…The normalised stiffness variation with the number of cycles, evaluated for the fatigue tests at σ max =640 MPa for the CFRP panels with R/ 1FS and 5CNBR-NP/ R matrices is shown in Figure 6. In general, materials exhibit stiffness reduction with fatigue cycles [13,14]. It may be noted that the initial stiffness reduction for both samples is significant, however, rate of this reduction was slightly higher for the CFRP panel with 5CNBR-NP/ R matrix.…”

“…In general, materials exhibit a stiffness degradation with increasing number of cycles. 22,23 The initial stiffness reduction for the two sets of specimens is significant, however, the rate of this degradation was slightly higher for the CFRP panel with the 5 phr of nanorubber loading (5 CNBR-NP/R). This may be attributed to the higher negative slope of the CFRP panel with the 5 CNBR-NP/R matrix compared to the panel with the pristine matrix (Table 3).…”
