Purpose: Human behavior is complex, resulting from dynamic person-environment interactions. The study of determinants in an ecological model can be useful to understand this complexity. When it comes to bicycle commuting, previous research has identified several individual and environmental determinants that can influence behaviour and likelihood to cycle. The purpose of this article is to provide an analytical framework integrating the determinants of cycling in an analysis from the perspective of Bronfenbrenner's ecological model. Methodology: Through a literature review, we select scientific articles that include studies conducted from a variety of cities in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Findings: As a result, the article presents the determining factors for bicycle commuting in a diagram based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model. Research limitation: Further research, which may include a systematic or an umbrella review, could be conducted to confirm the determining factors that influence bicycle commuting in urban areas. In addition, broader work is needed to understand which factors influence the adhesion of shared bicycles and how they fit into the ecological model proposed by Bronfenbrenner. Originality: Our article provides guidelines for an analytic framework that can be a useful tool in case studies or comparative research on mobility and urbanism.

The supply chain sector plays a crucial role in driving economic development and globalization. However, the environmental repercussions of logistics and freight transport have become more pronounced. Nowadays, there is an ever-increasing acceptance regarding the opinion that the use of more sustainable urban freight transport has the potential to offer great social, economic, and environmental benefits. This study examines and highlights, via a systematic literature review, the urban environment’s factors that can essentially influence the promotion and usage of cargo bikes for last-mile deliveries in the urban environment. The aforementioned literature review revealed the importance of the quality of the urban environment’s components for the perceived and objective safety of people who make use of cargo bikes. In particular, the most essential factors for the increased use of cargo bikes were found to be traffic load, speed limits, and heavy vehicle traffic. Bicycle infrastructure is also an important factor in bicycling acceptance, as it provides the backbone for a comfortable and safe bicycle ride. Two other factors that can seriously affect cyclists’ sense of safety are street intersections and the width and number of road lanes, as the interaction between cargo bikes and motorized vehicles increases the possibility of traffic accidents. All the above factors need to be considered via various public policies that are not isolated countermeasures but form part of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans that are currently being implemented in many European cities to ensure continuity and create a sustainable future.

“…Para que las políticas de movilidad urbana sustentable sean efectivas, en materia de la bicicleta, es necesario que se establezcan y programen en conjunto las principales líneas de actuación de los actores involucrados en la implementación de la política, considerando un proceso de cambio en la política de movilidad y urbanística general (Sanz Alduán et al, 2018). Dentro de los cambios que deben ser realizados está la necesidad de cubrir la demanda por infraestructura básica que consiste en rutas seguras para bicicletas, iluminadas, que cuenten con seguridad pública/ vial, con pavimentos en condiciones adecuadas, señales de tránsito exclusivos, reducción de la velocidad media de los vehículos motorizados, estacionamientos para bicicletas, baños habilitados para ciclistas en sus destinos, entre otros (Brand et al, 2014;Cavill, Kahlmeier, Rutter, Racioppi, & Oja, 2008;Clayton & Musselwhite, 2013;Fernández-heredia, Monzón, & Jara-díaz, 2014;Sousa & Sanches, 2019).…”

Motivados por la Política Nacional de Movilidad Urbana, los municipios brasileños inician un proceso de implementación de medidas que faciliten el uso de la bicicleta como transporte en sus territorios. Es de gran relevancia caracterizar las condiciones del uso de este medio de transporte y, a la vez, evaluar cómo los municipios afrontan el desafío planteado a nivel federal para la movilidad urbana. Este trabajo discute las capacidades municipales destinadas a la planificación y gestión de la bicicleta como transporte. Para esto, se analizaron documentos oficiales y se entrevistaron a los responsables de transporte de 11 municipios de la Región Metropolitana do Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte. Los resultados muestran que la política y sus directrices han logrado permear en la gestión y planificación municipal resaltando la importancia de la bicicleta como medio de transporte. Sin embargo, sigue siendo la capacidad institucional municipal la brecha a subsanar en la implementación de medidas.
