Fault-Tolerant Control for Carrier-Based UAV Based on Sliding Mode Method

Abstract: To enable a carrier-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to track the desired glide trajectory and safely land on the deck with the presence of system faults, this paper proposes a neural network-based adaptive sliding mode fault-tolerant control (NASFTC) method. Firstly, the dynamic model of the carrier -based UAV, the actuator fault model, the additional unknown fault model, and the control framework of the automatic carrier landing system (ACLS) were developed. Subsequently, controllers for both longitudinal… Show more

“…To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comparative simulations with Proportion-integration-differentiation (PID) (Bian et al , 2022) and sliding mode control (SMC) (Yao et al , 2023) are conducted. To alleviate chattering, the S˙=k1Sk2tanhtrue(Strue) reaching law is adopted for SMC.…”

“…Therefore, apart from the GFTSMC, a traditional SMC, a nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller (NSTSMC) and a PID controller are presented for comparison. The design steps of SMC and NSTSMC refer to reference Yao et al (2023) and Hamid et al (2021), respectively. Comparative simulation results of different control schemes are illustrated in Figure 5.…”

“…In addition, SMC can be combined with other control methods to deal with complicated problems, such as fault tolerant flight control system. Combined with radial basis function neural network and adaptive laws, the SMC developed in reference Yao et al (2023) successfully compensated the systematic faults and execute carrier landing task. In a follow-up study, the researchers designed an improved neural-aided SMC, which was applied to an aircraft with an unknown actuator stuck failure during auto-landing (Ismail et al , 2014).…”
