Fibromyxoid Nephrogenic Adenoma in the Ureter

Abstract: Background: Nephrogenic adenoma is a benign lesion found in the genitourinary tract, often at sites of prior inflammation, and is characterized by tubular, papillary, or tubulopapillary structures. It is thought to arise from distal migration and implantation of renal tubular cells into the renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, or urethra. These tumors often resemble malignant neoplasms. Morphologic variants include small tubules, signet ring-like pattern, papillary formations, flat pattern, and vessel-like structure… Show more

“…There have been 3 additional cases of this rare variant reported in 2 case reports and 3 additional cases included in our recently published paper on the collision of urothelial cancer with nephrogenic adenoma. [8][9][10] Similar to classic nephrogenic adenoma, the current study demonstrated that the fibromyxoid variant also most commonly was seen in older males in the bladder. Nephrogenic adenoma in the renal pelvis is very rare, with <20 cases reported in the literature including 1 fibromyxoid variant.…”

“…Hansel et al [ 13 ] first described a fibromyxoid variant of NA in 2007, after which the first case of fibromyxoid NA in the ureter was reported. [ 14 ] In addition, a flat pattern was first described in 2013, and was found in 8 of 15 cases of NA, often mixed with the more traditional tubular, polypoid, and papillary components. [ 15 ] Besides, they also found that flat pattern was a common histomorphological manifestation of NA but could be easily confused with atypical flat urothelial lesions.…”

“…Definite diagnosis of the lesions can be made with histopathologic evaluation (11). Various growth patterns including tubular, tubulocystic, polypoid, papil- lary, fibromyxoid, and flat growth patterns have been defined in histopathologic examination (11,12). The most common growth pattern is tubular.…”

“…Papillary formations may be prominently simple or contain slight branches. Other growth patterns include solid islets, cell cords, and fibromyxoid growth, consisting of spindle cells in myxoid stroma (11,12). Nephrogenic adenomas do not typically exhibit widespread invasion; however they may exhibit focal or superficial involvement of the muscularis propria (13).…”
