Finish diamond machining of ceramic femoral heads

Abstract: In the present paper reported is the manufacturing of ceramic spherical implants for medical purposes by employing diamond-abrasive lapping techniques. The technological parameters of this technique and a theoretical model experimentally verified are presented. A novel method of control of the free lapping process is suggested, resulting, as indicated by the experimental and theoretical results, in a decrease of time requested for the coordination of the profiles of the tool and the workpiece and in an increas… Show more

“…If processing is carried out faster, the individual pulses do not overlap sufficiently, and if carried out slower the material receives a high thermal load and cracks. Although this is not a significant increase in material removal rate over traditional methods, 15 laser processing provides the means to create custom parts with intricate individual features.…”

“…Y‐TZP in its final state is conventionally processed using grinding and sand‐blasting techniques, 13–15 which, in many cases, provide an excellent finish with a good definition on general shaping of the bulk material. The factor limiting these systems is that they are contact processes with defined tool sizes and processing tolerances.…”

“…Thus, at BIST in Kiev, there is a great deal of experience accumulated in manufacturing hip-joint prosthesis heads using biocompatible ceramics on the basis of Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 (see Fig. 4 and [3]). The application of the ultra-dispersible diamond powder UDAP (see Fig.…”

“…Thus, the joint fastening and strengthening of the tool ensures the free selfinstallation of the concave working surface of the part; during the removal of the oversize from the part and the wear of the tool, the profile of the latter is matching the shape and the profile of the part [12].…”

“…It will be mentioned that the roughness is quite good all around the surface, but not uniform. This will be corrected with the use of special grinding machines, which will make the finishing of the manufactured head [12]. Values were measured from five points from each sphere and each measure was repeated three times in order to eliminate the random error.…”
