Flood Inundation and Dam Break Analysis for Disaster Risk Mitigation (A Case Study of Way Apu Dam )

Abstract: This paper presents a numerical modeling to simulate flood inundation and dam break analysis of Way Apu dam for an emergency action plan (EAP), by considering EAP guidelines for ICOLD (International Committee on Large Dam). The Way Apu dam, located in Way Apu River, Maluku, Indonesia is a multi-purpose dam constructed mainly for irrigation, hydropower, water supply, and flood control. Therefore, the dam's outflow discharge needs to be analyzed, due to the large amount of rainfall in eastern Indonesia. Thus, th… Show more

“…Rivers which are always synonymous with slum areas or slum areas make it very easy to find small animals such as mosquitoes, flies, rats, insects plus a river landscape whose borders are swampy soils that are very easy to find puddles up to flood plains [29], [30]. The soil in the river when entering the rainy season with conditions of increased water discharge plus the condition of the buildings around it will turn out to be watertight so that the settlements are flooded by water [31], [32]. This inundation condition will gradually form a new ecosystem [33].…”

“…The 2D flow module can be used to model flow, sediment transport, and water quality in river systems. HEC-RAS 2D v6.3 could conduct a one-dimensional steady flow model and twodimensional unsteady flow models could improves the performance of several hydraulic structures and lateral buildings, such as weirs, gates, pump stations, bridge scouring, as well as dam break model simulation [30,31].…”

“…The Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) [10] is a widely used software for river flow modeling, including floodplain analysis, sediment transport, dam break [11], and water quality analysis. HEC-RAS has been widely used for one-dimensional (1D) modeling of river hydraulics.…”
