We investigate the interaction between anionic surfactants (AS) and a self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The AS include two common fluorosurfactants, which have been previously formulated in aqueous film‐forming foam (AFFF): perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and two common detergents: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS). The AS can re‐configure the SAM arrangement, particularly on nanoporous gold surface due to the high density of defects and pinholes of SAM, which results in changes to the electrochemical redox kinetics and interface capacitance of the SAM. Based on the experimental results, we hypothesis that AS insert and dope the pristine monolayer, which is evidenced with EQCM and EIS.

Using a novel magnetic nanocomposite as adsorbent, a convenient and effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) procedure was established for selective separation and concentration of nine perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in surface water sample. Then an ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) system was employed for detection of PFCs. Good linearity of the developed analytical method was in the range of 0.5–100 ng L−1 with R2 > 0.9917, and the limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.029 to 0.099 ng L−1. At three fortified concentrations of 0.5, 5 and 50 ng L−1, the spiked recoveries of PFCs were in the range of 90.05–106.67% with RSDs < 12.62% (n = 3). The proposed analytical method was applied for determination of PFCs in surface water from East Lake (Wuhan, China). The total concentrations of nine PFCs ranged from 30.12 to 125.35 ng L−1, with perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluoroctanoic acid as the most prevalent PFCs, and the greatest concentrations of PFCs were observed in Niuchao lakelet. The concentrations of the PFCs (C ≥ 11) were mostly less than the limits of quantification (LOQs), attributed to the possibility that the more hydrophobic long-chain PFCs are potential to accumulate in sediment and aquatic biota.

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are becoming more stringently regulated and as such, a more diverse suite of environmental monitoring methods is needed. In this work a polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) with a nylon membrane and a combination of Oasis WAX and Fluoroflash® sorbents was calibrated in the laboratory and deployed in the field. A static renewal system was used to determine sampling rates for 12 PFAS which ranged between 0.69 ± 0.27 to 5.68 ± 1.80 L/day. POCIS devices were deployed for 10 days in lake Tyrifjorden, Norway which is known to be contaminated by a closed down factory producing paper products, in order to track the evolution of the PFAS contamination in a river system draining into the lake. Th sampling campaign enabled the stretch of the river which was responsible for the emissions of PFAS to lake Tyrifjorden to be identified. Freely dissolved concentrations determined with the POCIS were lowest at the site considered to reflect a diffuse PFAS contamination and highest at the site located downstream the factory. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) and perfluorooctane sulfonamidoacetic acid (EtFOSAA) dominated the concentration profile at this site. Emissions of PFAS to lake Tyrifjorden were estimated to be 3.96 g/day for the sum of the 12 investigated PFAS.
