Flux-lines lattice order and critical current studied by time-of-flight small-angle neutron scattering

Abstract: Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is an historical technique to study the flux lines lattice (FLL) in a superconductor. Structural characteristics of the FLL can be revealed, providing fundamental information for the physics of vortex lattice. However, the spatial resolution is limited and all the correlation lengths of order are difficult to extract with precision. We show here that a time of flight technique reveals the Bragg peak of the FLL, and also its translational order with a better resolution. We … Show more

“…associating the PE with a bulk order-disorder transition is widely accepted, this is not universal. This is due to some observations of an ordered VL above the PE (Pautrat et al, 2009(Pautrat et al, , 2007 and studies which indicate that this is caused by surface rather than bulk pinning (Pautrat et al, 2012). Here, one should note that few SANS measurements are performed under the same exact conditions (transport currents, AC fields) as those used to determine the PE.…”

Throughout the described examples, high importance is placed on the application of SANS alongside other scattering techniques.…”

“…The dominant pinning mechanism in pure Nb is generally surface pinning [26,27] which has no direct relation with a bulk disordering of the lattice [40]. As a consequence, significant critical current can be present without direct relation with vortex disorder due to bulk pinning.…”
