Follicular dysplasia in two cows

Abstract: The histological features of a follicular dysplasia with pigmentary changes is reported in two adult cows, one a black Brangus-cross and the other a black Angus. Adult onset of diuse alopecia was present in both cows. Skin biopsies exhibited follicular distortion and atrophy, with melanin clumping in follicular epithelium, hair bulb matrix cells, hair shafts, and infundibular keratin. Both animals were clinically normal apart from the alopecia. This report con®rms and expands on the infrequently reported syndr… Show more

“…They include colour‐linked follicular dysplasias with an abnormal melanization of the pilosebaceous units such as colour dilution alopecia and black‐hair follicular dysplasia, noncolour‐linked cyclical follicular dysplasias such as recurrent flank alopecia, and noncolour‐linked noncyclical follicular dysplasias 17,18 . Colour‐linked follicular dysplasia has also been described in cows 19,20 . However, none of these conditions reported in dogs and cows are histologically comparable to what we observed in the coatis.…”

“…13 Bovine follicular dysplasia has been described. [26][27][28] Clinically, this entity is difficult to differentiate from AA. It involves black-haired areas of the body, suggesting a similarity with black-hair follicular dysplasia described in dogs.…”

“…These include hypotrichosis in the Arabian horse and its crosses, and mane and tail hair dystrophy in the Appaloosa (Fadok 1995b). Follicular dysplasias causing hypotrichosis and alopecia are reported in other species including the cow (Miller and Scott 1990;Mansell 1999), sheep (Mackie and McIntyre 1992) and dog (Miller 1990;Beco et al 1996). However, to date, no report on cases in the horse has been published, although anecdotal evidence exists for its occurrence (Scott 1999).…”
