Aim The links between geo‐ and biodiversity, postulated by Humboldt, can now be made quantitative. Species are adapted to their environments and interact with their environments by having pertinent functional traits. We aim to improve global ecometric models using functional traits for estimating palaeoclimate and apply models to Pleistocene fauna for palaeoclimate interpretation. Location Global at present day, Pleistocene of Europe for fossil data analysis. Taxa Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Proboscidea and Primates. Methods We quantify functional traits of large mammal communities and develop statistical models linking trait distributions to local climate at present day. We apply these models to the fossil record, survey functional traits, and quantitatively estimate climates of the past. This approach to analysing functional relationships between faunal communities and their environments is called ecometrics. Results and main conclusions Here, we present new global ecometric models for estimating mean annual and minimum temperature from dental traits of present day mammalian communities. We also present refined models for predicting net primary productivity. Using dental ecometric models, we produce palaeoclimate estimates for 50 Pleistocene fossil localities in Europe and show that the estimates are consistent with trends derived from other proxies, especially for minimum temperatures, which we hypothesize to be ecologically limiting. Our new temperature models allow us to trace the distribution of freezing and non‐freezing ecosystems in the recent past, opening new perspectives on the evolution of cold‐adaptive biota as the Pleistocene cooling progressed.

The Pampas of Argentina is a large grassland ecosystem located in the oriental region southern of South America. As a study case, we present the results of the paleoclimatic analysis of the Tixi Cave site. This is a paleontological and archeological locality that shows a long chronologic sequence, with radiocarbon dates ranging from the Late Pleistocene to historical times, and one of the best records of meso and microvertebrate fossils in South America. Paleoclimatic reconstruction was assayed using the Mutual Ecogeographic Range method. Ecological niche models were made for each of the living representatives of the fossil taxa reported at the site. Potential distribution areas were superimposed to perform the paleoclimatic inference and to infer the annual average temperature and the annual average precipitation. During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition (12,287 ± 212–11,609 ± 218 ca BP) and in the Middle-Holocene (5592 ± 79 ca BP), colder and drier climates appear in comparison to the present climate, the remaining of the Holocene (3496 ± 81–160 ± 120 ca BP) shows warmer and humid climates as compared to today’s climate conditions. Our results are in agreement with the paleoenvironmental inferences obtained by other proxies, such as deposition, paleosols, phytoliths, diatoms, ostracods, and pollen for Late Pleistocene -Holocene of the region, showing that the abundance of small mammals can accurately record the climatic fluctuations of the Late Pleistocene-Holocene in the Pampas of Argentina.

Highlights  An updated account of the Mollusca and mammals from the Weybourne Crag in the UK and NL.  A Macoma balthica-Mya arenaria concurrent range zone is defined, tracable across the North Sea.  The small mammals from the Weybourne Crag and its correlatives belong to Mammal biozone MNR1.  Details of the first British records of the voles Mimomys hordijki and Ungaromys dehmi are provided.  Amino acid dating supports the contemporaneity of the Macoma balthica-Mya arenaria concurrent range zone.  Amino acid data indicate that the Baventian cold stage postdates the Bramertonian.  The Baventian and "Pre-Pastonian a" (Weybourne Crag) appear to be distinct cold stages.  Revised age for the "Weybourne Crag" has implications for the duration of the Norwich Crag and the Tiglian.
