Frame changes and the management of intractable conflicts

Abstract: Frames play an important role in intractable conflict. As lenses through which disputants interpret conflicts, divergent frames limit the clarity of communication and the quality of information and encourage escalation. These frames, embedded in personal, social, and institutional roles, are often quite stable over time. Yet in some intractable conflicts, reframing interventions have contributed to tractability.A riot is at bottom the language of the unheard.Martin Luther King Jr., American civil rights leade… Show more

“…According to Gray (2003: 15), "Frames are used to 1) defi ne issues, 2) shape what action should be taken and by whom, 3) protect oneself, 4) justify the stand we are taking on an issue, and 5) mobilise people to take or refrain from action on issues." Thus, frames are constructed in interaction and used strategically to persuade others to our point of view, gain advantage in negotiations, and rally likeminded people to our causes (Shmueli et al 2006). Thus, in the interactional framing approach, people co-construct social realities in conversations (Pearce & Cronen 1980;Ford et al 2002;Dewulf et al 2009).…”

“…Such cognitive constructions are used to simplify high amounts of information. Frames thus, serve as filters to individuals' insights, influence them and organize any particular phenomenon into understandable categories (Shmueli et al, 2006). As argued by Dewulf et al (2009) frame are cognitive representation of knowledge which is stored in memory and then recovered and used in new conditions.…”
