Friedrich Hayek and his visits to Chile

Abstract: F. A. Hayek took two trips to Chile, the first in 1977, the second in 1981. The visits were controversial. On the first trip he met with General Augusto Pinochet, who had led a coup that overthrew Salvador Allende in 1973. During his 1981 visit, Hayek gave interviews that were published in the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio and in which he discussed authoritarian regimes and the problem of unlimited democracy. “…A külföldi és a globális vállalatok jelen voltak az országban, 1957-ben mintegy 20 nagyvállalat volt a felelős a teljes piaci kibocsátás 28%-áért, 1966-ban pedig 284 vállalat irányította a teljes gazdaság nagy részét (Schneider, 2004). A Pinochet előtti időszak szocialista típusú kormányzása a pénzügyi szektor 80%-ának államosításával, magas inflációval és lassú gazdasági növekedéssel járt, valamint az államosítás elszigetelte az országot a világpiactól (Caldwell-Montes, 2015). A magánnyugdíjpénztári rendszer, a privatizáció és a kedvező állami hitellehetőségek jelenléte fejlesztette a gazdaságot, habár a későbbiekben elősegítette a gazdasági szereplők koncentrálódását (Sanchez, 2017).…”

“…Indeed, Wilson reports that “Friedman … Hayek … Buchanan … [all] the stars in the firmament of monetarism and public choice, were on hand from 1973 as unhidden (hired) hands to guide General Pinochet's military dictatorship according to their economic theory” (1992, p. 77). According to Plehwe (), the “special relationship between Chicago [i.e., Friedman and Harberger] and Santiago has been better researched than most other neoliberal forays” (p. 32) and Hayek's visits to Chile have similarly attracted much scholarly interest (see, e.g., Farrant and McPhail ; Caldwell and Montes ). By contrast, Buchanan's involvement with Pinochet's Chile has been largely ignored until relatively recently (see, e.g., Fischer ; MacLean ).…”
