Functional evaluation of cerebral palsy using the ICIDH

Abstract: In the past children with cerebral palsy have been assessed by evaluation of the most important functions found to be disturbed in this condition. Such evaluation provides a database for planning long-term rehabilitation. The approach has been transformed by introduction of the ICIDH. From a practical point of view it is useful to concentrate evaluation on only the typical and important disabilities associated with cerebral palsy. It is recommended that, where the severity scale is not applicable to particular… Show more

“…Pfeiffer (1986) argues that the code is oriented too much towards gross motor functions. The total handicap score in our study seemed largely to be explained by variation in the dimension of mobility, where hand function is not reflected.…”

“…It has been applied in a number of population surveys (Pfeiffer 1986, Ferngren and Lagergren 1988, Veen et al 1991, Thornburn et al 1992, Beckung and Uvebrant 1997. The GMFCS has recently been developed for clinical practice in children with CP between the ages of 2 and 12 years, but the application of the model has, to our knowledge, not yet been documented.…”

“…The ICIDH is relevant to the long-term consequences of disease, injuries, or disorders and is applicable both to personal health care and to the planning of long-term rehabilitation. “…In summary, reports from France (Colvez & Robine, 1986), Switzerland (Paccaud, 1986), Great Britain (Badley & Lee, 1987), Germany (Seidel & Tscherner, 1985), Finland (Alaranta & Kallio, 1986), Czechoslovakia (Pfeiffer, 1986), Canada (McDowell, 1981), United States (Granger, 1985, Australia (Ford, 1984), and the Netherlands (Hirs, 1986;Wiersma, 1986) agreed that development of the ICIDH is an important first step given the increasing awareness of the chronicity of disease and the failure of the disease based classification system (ICD-9) to capture the functional consequences of disease. Of note to occupational therapists who work closely with physiotherapists, Wagstaff (1982) encouraged use and summarized possible applications in that field.…”
