The aim of this paper is to investigate the basic properties of car seat fabrics applied in automotive textiles. Three types of textile materials namely velvet, flock and flat woven fabrics were used in this research for investigation. These three types of fabrics are available in private cars and also cost effective in local market. Polyester fabrics were used as base fabric along with all these velvet, flock and flat woven fabrics. Polyester fabrics are stronger those provide strength to the seat fabrics where velvet and flock fabrics provide comfort to the passengers. These textile fibers have also very good comfort properties. Different types of experiments namely fiber identification, strength test, color fastness test, abrasion resistant test and bending test were carried out in accordance with the test method provided by ISO standard. Microscopic views were also taken for assessment. Color fastness properties were also investigated to know the best color values. Grey scale test method for color property testing was used for all types of color fastness tests. This research is practice based and the findings are important for the personnel employed in automotive industries and to controlling of their properties. Further research can be conducted and commercial production may be beneficial by virtue of this research.

Aramid and polyamide cords are used in a wide range of applications, particularly in the automotive industry (tire reinforcement) and textile industry for military and fireguard purposes. The problem of the reliable experimental study of tensile behavior of synthetic cords is considered in this paper. In the available standards for synthetic cord testing, particularly ASTM D 885-03, the tensile test must result with the cord damage in the middle of gauge length, and the cords should be fixed in the machine clamps. The trial test gave damage near the clamps. We propose a novel testing stage mounted in the testing machine clamps to achieve the uniform tensile stress distribution in the gauge length of the measured cords. The results of the deformations were measured in two ways: using testing machine head displacement and a videoextensometer. Stress curves of four distinguished cords were evaluated and compared. The second method allowed to acquire results differing from the manufacturers’ data from 0.7% to 21.5%, which allowed for the conclusion that the designed test stand allows for obtaining reliable results for stretched cords.

Automotive textiles are one of the most important markets in the technical textile sector. Various types of requirements must be considered in the development of the interior fabrics to satisfy both esthetic and functional demands. Many factors are affecting the properties of the car upholstery fabrics, for instance textile material, yarn specifications, fabric construction, and finishing material as well as combined with UV and light resistance. The influence of UV radiation on the degradation rate involves several parameters such as fabric tenacity, elongation, abrasion resistance, and flammability, under exposure to sunlight for several exposure times. Consequently, it’s important to determine the degradation of the automotive textiles according to area where it will be served. Generally, several properties are prerequisites should be all together considered to selected car upholstery fabric, basis on overseeing several requirements and ranking the candidate fabric properties. In this paper, an approach to choose the optimal material for a given component is described, and fabric properties are classified given each a suitable weight. In a simulation of a car cabin in shape and conditions, a radiation chamber was constructed to expose different fabric specimens to sun light. Two evaluation methods were proposed for the ranking of the car upholstery material, made of different fabrics, according to its property loss due to UV exposure during severability. It was found that polyester and nylon are ranked to be the best materials for automobile upholstery.
