Comparative Evaluation of Top-Down GOSAT XCO2 vs. Bottom-Up National Reports in the European Countries

Submitting national inventory reports (NIRs) on emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is obligatory for parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The NIR forms the basis for monitoring individual countries’ progress on mitigating climate change. Countries prepare NIRs using the default bottom–up methodology of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), as approved by the Kyoto protocol. We provide tangible evidence of the discrepancy between official bottom–up NIR reporting (unit: tons) versus top–down XCO2 reporting (unit: ppm) within the European continent, as measured by the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT). Bottom–up NIR (annual growth rate of CO2 emission from 2010 to 2016: −1.55%) does not show meaningful correlation (geographically weighted regression coefficient = −0.001, R2 = 0.024) to top–down GOSAT XCO2 (annual growth rate: 0.59%) in the European countries. The top five countries within the European continent on carbon emissions in NIR do not match the top five countries on GOSAT XCO2 concentrations. NIR exhibits anthropogenic carbon-generating activity within country boundaries, whereas satellite signals reveal the trans-boundary movement of natural and anthropogenic carbon. Although bottom–up NIR reporting has already gained worldwide recognition as a method to track national follow-up for treaty obligations, the single approach based on bottom–up did not present background atmospheric CO2 density derived from the air mass movement between the countries. In conclusion, we suggest an integrated measuring, reporting, and verification (MRV) approach using top–down observation in combination with bottom–up NIR that can provide sufficient countrywide objective evidence for national follow-up activities.

Rapid global infrastructural developments and advanced material science, amongst other factors, have escalated the demand for concrete. Cement, which is an integral part of concrete, binds the various individual solid materials to form a cohesive mass. Its production to a large extent emits many tons of greenhouse gases, with nearly 10% of global carbon (IV) oxide (CO2) emanating from cement production. This, coupled with an increase in the advocacy for environmental sustainability, has led to the development of various innovative solutions and supplementary cementitious materials. These aims to substantially reduce the overall volume of cement required in concrete and to meet the consistently increasing demand for concrete, which is projected to increase as a result of rapid construction and infrastructural development trends. Palm oil fuel ash (POFA), an industrial byproduct that is a result of the incineration of palm oil wastes due to electrical generation in power plants has unique properties, as it is a very reactive materials with robust pozzolanic tendencies, and which exhibits adequate micro-filling capabilities. In this study, a review on the material sources, affecting factors, and durability characteristics of POFA are carefully appraised. Moreover, in this study, a review of correlated literature with a broad spectrum of insights into the likely utilization of POFA-based eco-friendly concrete composites as a green material for the present construction of modern buildings is presented.

kullanılarak trend analizi yapmak oluşturmaktadır. Havza genelinde uzun yıllar boyunca ölçüm yapan meteoroloji ve akım gözlem istasyonlarının aylık ölçülmüş ortalama sıcaklık, yağış ve akım verileri ele alınarak bu verilerin yıllık ve mevsimlik eğilimlerini analiz etmek araştırmanın amacını oluşturmaktadır. Kapalı havzalarda iklim parametrelerindeki değişikliğin daha kolay fark edileceği düşüncesiyle böyle bir konu seçilmiştir. Ayrıca ulusal ve uluslararası literatüre iklim değişikliği çalışmaları üzerine bir katkı ve bir Türkiye örneğinin daha kazandırılması istenmiştir. Araştırmada yöntem olarak Mann-Kendall Testi ve Spearman'ın Rho Testi temel alınmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre havza genelinde ortalama sıcaklıklarda anlamlı artışlar gözlenirken yağış olarak Ardahan ve Kars meteoroloji istasyonlarında anlamlı artışa rastlanmış diğer istasyonlarda ise bir eğilim gözlenmemiştir. Akım gözlem istasyonlarından Kağızman istasyonunda akımda anlamlı artış, Sarısu Nonak istasyonunda anlamlı azalış, diğer istasyonlarda ise bir eğilime rastlanmamıştır. Havza genelinde gözlenen sıcaklık artışları yağış ve akım üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olmadığı anlaşılmaktadır.
