Gaussian Distribution-based Mode Selection for Intra Prediction of Spatial SHVC

Abstract: Due to the diversity of terminal devices, Spatial Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SSHVC) is an efficient solution to meet this requirement. However, its coding process is very complex, which seriously prevents its wide applications. Therefore, it is very crucial to reduce coding complexity and improve coding speed. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian Distribution-based Mode Selection for Intra Prediction of SSHVC. We show that the rate distortion costs of Inter-layer Reference (ILR) mode and Intra mode… Show more

“…The reduction in bitrate that is achieved by VVC does come with a trade-off of heightened computational complexity, posing challenges for real-time software and hardware applications [117]. The increased encoding complexity makes VVC less suitable for realtime applications [118]. While the coding tools implemented in VVC software test model (VTM) 3.0 enhance the average coding efficiency by 21.08% compared to the HEVC Test Model (HM) 16.19% in all intra-coding configurations, these improvements are achieved at the cost of a significant increase in encoding complexity [119].…”

“…To achieve an early termination for coding mode evaluation, Wang et al [10] proposed a few conditions based on the RD cost differences among square coding modes. Wang et al [11]- [13] first investigated RD cost distributions of ILR mode and Intra mode, and then used the distributions to determine whether ILR mode is the best mode thus skipping Intra mode.…”
