“…This said, we recognize that gender-insensitive approaches often have harmful effects and instrumental tendencies. A gender-insensitive approach is likely to maintain the status quo and perpetuate, if not exacerbate, existing social inequalities (Mott et al, 2021) and they often "foster damaging stereotypes" (Gupta, 2001, p. 10). We adopt a similar framing to Gupta (2001), who defines a gender-sensitive approach with reference to HIV/AIDS interventions as "programming that recognizes and responds to the differential needs and constraints of individuals based on their gender."…”

“…There is now more explicit capacity building work being carried out to sensitise project staff on GESI issues and norms change. The Towards Transformation GESI Self-Assessment Tool (Mott et al 2021) encourages reflective practice among WASH project staff and stakeholders and asks them to think and work in more gender and socially transformative waysnot only in their WASH programmes, but also in their organisational practice, because it is recognised that they are interdependent. The dialogue was informed by a gender power analysis, which found negative stereotyping about women's ability to work in the WASH sector was a key barrier to their entry or promotion.…”
