General effects of currents and sound-speed variations on short-range acoustic transmission in cyclonic eddies

Abstract: The effects of sound-speed and current variations induced by a mesoscale cyclonic eddy on short-range propagation are considered. A parametric eddy model is used t0• determine acoustically relevant eddy environmental effects, so that eddy-acoustical effects can be determined for eddies of arbitrary size, strength, and position. Approximations to sound-speed and current structures are used to investigate eddy effects on the three-dimensionality of rays and on ray types. The influence of current and soundspeed v… Show more

“…20 Only small horizontal refraction was demonstrated theoretically for deepwater situations involving, for example, strong eddies and currents. 21,22 This paper contains three principal contributions. First, the dominant signals generated by the airgun source are broadband pulses below 100 Hz, with relatively less energy up to 180 Hz.…”

“…Previous studies have addressed the question of the impact of oceanic eddies on sound propagation, mostly for surface intensified eddies. Henrick et al (1980) [12] introduced an acoustic model that related sound speed variations to the eddy radii and rotation rates. Bong-Chae et al (2012) [13] investigated eddies in the East/Japan Sea near the Korean Peninsula.…”

“… Henrick et al [1977] presented a model of acoustically relevant sound speed perturbation and currents, relating these environmental effects to the parameters characterizing the eddy size and strength. With the model, the influences of the current and the sound speed variation on the travel time and the phase variation were examined [ Henrick et al , 1980]. These numerical studies were carried out in deep sea acoustical environments, which are different from the shallow waters, such as the ECS shelf area.…”
