Generalized Effects of On-Street Parking Maneuvers on the Performance of Nearby Signalized Intersections

Abstract: An on-street parking maneuver can often start a temporary bottleneck that leads to additional delay of following vehicles. When the maneuver occurs upstream near a signalized intersection, the scope of the impact can be magnified. In this case, the intersection might be starved for traffic because of the parking maneuver, so a portion of the intersection capacity is wasted. The authors of this paper estimate the reduction in service rate attributable to the delay from an upstream parking maneuver at different … Show more

“…Another branch of literature deals with the impacts of on-street parking in the vicinity of signalized intersections. Ye and Xin ( 10 ) and Cao and Menendez ( 11 ) evaluated intersection delays caused by parking maneuvers. Similarly, Gu et al ( 12 ) estimated the delays caused by the presence of bus stops near signalized intersections, while Gayah et al ( 13 ) investigated a wider range of roadway obstructions, including parking maneuvers.…”

“…For example, in the city of Barcelona, the average delivery time is around 18 minutes [25] and vehicles are allowed to park in dedicated areas for a maximum of 30 minutes. Other cities such as Valencia, Lyon, Rome, or Westminster have similar time restrictions for delivery parking [2,3,52].…”
