Generating game content from open data

Abstract: DATA GAMESWe would like to add to the ever-growing list of things that can be done with games by proposing, discussing and exemplifying data games. A data game is a game that allows the player(s) to explore data that is derived from outside the game, by transforming the data into something that can be played with. In other words, games as a form of interactive data visualisation. We believe that games, through their procedural and interactive nature, can provide possibilities for visualisation over and beyond … Show more

“…The results showed how standard game mechanics can be applied to Open Data to provide useful and engaging educational experiences. The author of [32] contributed in her research to the ever-growing list of things that can be done with games by proposing, discussing, and exemplifying data games. Data games differ from most other types of serious games in as they do not (intentionally) have an agenda; they are tools for the player to use to explore data with as few constraints as possible.…”

“…It makes sense that freely available data could be used to inform content generation and game generation algorithms, in effect helping them transform the real world into games. Such data-driven game content generation has been attempted under the moniker "data games" [18]. In particular, the Data Adventures series has explored ways of automatically creating adventure games in the style of Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?…”

“…OpenData Monopoly (Friberger y Togelius, 2012) es un generador de tableros para el renombrado juego de mesa que crea tableros y tarjetas basados en datos demográficos y geográficos de Reino Unido. Un conjunto de indicadores numéricos componen las variables del algoritmo que interactúa con el jugador con el fin de generar una visualización del mismo concepto de prosperidad.…”
