Genetic Diversity in Slovak Spotted Breed

Abstract: The objective of the study was to evaluate inbreeding and genetic diversity inSlovak Spotted cattle. Reference population contained genealogic information on36949 animals (129 sires and 36820 cows) that were used in the analyses. Pedigreecompleteness indexes in the first three generations were on the level of 100 %, inthe 5th generation it was 60 %. Since 1970, inbreeding trend was positive withsignificant increasing in 1990. Average relationship was 0.8 %, inbreeding rate0.36 % and ΔF = 0.094 %. In the refere… Show more

“…The level of recent inbreeding in Charolais and Limousin populations was in sound with Mastrangelo et al [79]. The obtained estimates of recent inbreeding in Slovak Spotted and Slovak Pinzgau populations correspond to the pedigree estimates found by Kadlečík et al [80] and Kadlečík et al [81], respectively. The other three estimates (F GRM , F HOM , and F UNI ) of inbreeding indicated a non-significant effect of relatives mating on the genome of analysed populations.…”

“…The Slovak Spotted cattle is an important dual-purpose breed with a long farming tradition in Slovakia. It is mainly due to its excellent dairy as well as beef production (Strapák, 2004;Bujko et al, 2011;Strapák et al, 2013;Kasarda et al, 2015;Kadlečík et al, 2017), and belongs to the Simmental type of cattle.…”

“…Conservation of biodiversity has become one of the most important objectives, since diminishing diversity is considered to be a global problem addressed by many international programs, organizations, and strategies (Kadlečík et al, 2016).…”

“…As shown in many studies of wild as well as domestic species, the decrease of population size is mostly accompanied by the significant loss of genetic diversity. That is important for ensuring the adaptive potential of species and preventing the occurrence of inbreeding depression over a long time period (Kadlečík et al, 2016).…”
