Genetic Variance and Performance of Five Sugarcane Varieties for Physiological, Yield and Quality Traits Influenced by Various Harvest Age

Abstract: Field experiments was carried out at Shandaweel Agricultural Research Station, Sohag Governorate during 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. The aim of this research to investigate three harvest dates at ages of(11,12 and 13 months)on the performance of five promising sugarcane varieties G.84-47,G.2003-47, G.2003-49,G.2004-27 and the commercial variety G.T.54-9 as a control. The harvest age up to 13 months recorded the highest values of cane and sugar yields in plant cane (52.08 and 5.95 tons/fed (fed=0.42ha), res… Show more

“…The increase in cane yield/fed accompanied the delay in plant age of harvesting may be due increasing millable length, diameter and number of millable canes/fed Tables (2, 3 and 4). The increase in sugar yield/fed may be referred to the increase in brix, sucrose and sugar recovery percentages Tables (5, 6 and 7) as well as the increase in cane yield Table (8).These results are in conformity with those of (Muchowb et al, 1998;El-Geddawy-Dalia et al, 2011;El-Geddawy et al, 2012;Terauchi et al, 2012;Endris et al, 2016;Abu-Ellail et al, 2020).…”

“…Endris et al, (2016) observed that the maximum sugar yield value (ton/ha) was reported at 14 months of harvesting age. Abu-Ellail et al, (2020) studied three harvest dates at ages of 11,12 and 13 months, they found that harvest age up to 13 months recorded the highest values of cane and sugar yields.…”

“…However, Zn plays an essential role in regulating carbohydrate metabolism [15,61,62], contributing to the increasing sucrose content in the stalks. This is explained by the fact that the sugarcane quality depends on various factors, mainly the sugarcane variety [63,64] and weather parameters, i.e., rainfall, temperature, sunshine, and humidity [65][66][67]. Thus, Zn fertilization did not alter these parameters as other conditions controlled the sugarcane quality.…”
