Genetic variation and divergence of Leuciscus pyrenaicus and L. carolitertii (Pisces, Cyprinidae)

Abstract: The taxonomy of the genus Leuciscus in the Iberian Peninsula has been presented on the basis of morphological analysis. Two species are believed to occur in Portuguese inland waters, L. carolitertii, the northern basins chub, and L. pyrenaicus, which was described for the Tejo and southern basins. Since only slight differences in the meristic and morphometric characters are observed, the distinction between the two species has been made previously mainly on the basis of osteology. In order to investigate the p… Show more

“…In this period, it is likely that many basins almost dried up and the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula became isolated. This result supports previous studies based on allozymes and partial cytochrome b sequences (Brito et al, 1997;Coelho et al, 1995).…”

“…Nevertheless, the Iberian Peninsula has remained poorly studied. Molecular analysis on Portuguese populations of Squalius revealed a considerable population differentiation (Brito et al, 1997;Coelho et al, 1995), which led to the recent description of two new Squalius species (Coelho et al, 1998). Those results suggest that the diversity of this genus might be underrepresented, and that phylogenetic relationships among species and populations from the Iberian Peninsula needed to be revisited.…”

“…Its general habitat requirements (Carmona and Doadrio 2000, Santos et al 2004, Maia et al 2006 are well known, and data on population parameters, growth and reproduction have been reported by Maia et al (2006). Genetic, morphologic and phylogenetic studies have also focused on this fish species (Coelho et al 1995, Zardoya and Doadrio 1998, Gómez and Lunt 2007, Cunha et al 2009). However, diet composition of S. carolitertii remains poorly documented and the limited information available on feeding behaviour comes from Sánchez-Hernández and Cobo (2011).…”

“…This deficit may also be attributed to improper domestication processes occurring in the hatchery populations. The FST indicates the proportion of genetic variation that could be attributed to the genetic differentiation processes between the co-specifics from two localities (Coelho et al, 1995). Since there is no physical connection between the hatchery and reservoir, naturally no mixing is possible between stocks and hence they are expected to exhibit high genetic differentiation.…”
