Geochronology and palaeoenvironment of marine Quaternary deposits in Denmark: new evidence from northern Jutland

Abstract: The degree of isoleucine epimerization in the benthic foraminiferal species Elphidium excavatum and Bulimina marginata have been measured in four boreholes, penetrating marine interglacial beds, from northern Jutland. The results of these analyses are compiled with results obtained from other sites in Denmark and the North Sea region, and four aminozones (AZs) have been erected. AZ1 (aIle/Ile < 0.05) include the Late Weichselian and the Holocene part of the record. AZ2 (0.08-0.12

“…Five foraminiferal aminozones (AZ1-AZ5) can be distinguished, of which AZ5 is in the Early Pleistocene (Sejrup et al, 1987). The younger zones were correlated with the Holocene (AZ1), the Eemian (AZ2), MIS 7 (AZ3), and ?MIS 11 (AZ4) (Sejrup and Knudsen, 1999). Remarkably, marine MIS 9 foraminifera faunas have not been observed by these authors in Danish onshore deposits.…”

“…The development of the three stages in the micro-mammal evolutionary lineage of Arvicola terrestris cantiana-Arvicola terrestris terrestris (Van Kolfschoten, 1990) took place during NAZ-E, NAZ-D, and NAZ-C (the Noordbergum Interglacial, the Holsteinian, and the Oostermeer Interglacial). The Netherlands molluscan aminozones NAZ-B and NAZ-C correlate with the Danish foraminiferal aminozones AZ2 and AZ3 from Sejrup and Knudsen (1999). The British freshwater mollusc aminozones of Bowen (1992) correlate with our zonation as follows: Bowen-F with NAZ-B, Bowen-E with NAZ-C, Bowen-D with NAZ-D, and Bowen-C with NAZ-E. Marine deposits dating from MIS 7 (NAZ-C) have been found in Denmark, Germany, the northern and southwestern Netherlands, and Belgium.…”

“…() the lowermost part of the Skærumhede Group constitutes the latest Saalian transgressive systems tract. During the sea‐level highstand systems tract in the Eemian time, the deposition of the Skærumhede Group continued, and in the Early Weichselian glaciomarine conditions prevailed during progressive deposition, which terminated in the Middle Weichselian (Sejrup and Knudsen, ; Pedersen, ). In the Vendsyssel well the base of the Skærumhede Group is marked by a 20‐m‐thick Saalian till deposited during a Warthe ice advance (160–140 ka BP, Larsen et al , ).…”
