This work aims to provide a review of the routing protocols in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) from routing algorithms to their evaluation approaches. We provide five different taxonomies of routing protocols. First, we classify them based on their transmission strategy into three categories: unicast, geocast, and broadcast ones. Second, we classify them into four categories based on information required to perform routing: topology-, position-, map-, and path-based ones. Third, we identify them in delaysensitive and delay-tolerant ones. Fourth, we discuss them according to their applicability in different dimensions, i.e., 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D. Finally, we discuss their target networks, i.e., homogeneous and heterogeneous ones. As the evaluation is also a vital part in IoV routing protocol studies, we examine the evaluation approaches, i.e., simulation and real-world experiments. IoV includes not only the traditional vehicular ad hoc networks, which usually involve a small-scale and homogeneous network, but also a much larger scale and heterogeneous one. The composition of classical routing protocols and latest heterogeneous network approaches is a promising topic in the future. This work should motivate IoV researchers, practitioners, and new comers to develop IoV routing protocols and technologies.

Geocast is a communication technique to disseminate information in specific geographic regions instead of node addresses. Geocast routing in VANETs have become an area of interest for researchers. Traffic congestion, accidents and local hazards are examples of use cases of information sharing in VANETs. As geocast is an important part of ITS (intelligent transport system), many geocast routing protocols have been proposed in the past. Yet, geocast region selection techniques for VANET routing have not been studied in detail so far. In this paper we propose a map aware geocast routing protocol for information dissemination in VANETs. The target regions are selected by constructing a probability tree and information is disseminated along the branches of tree. Vehicles use two different packet forwarding modes based on their direction towards the hazardous road. Packets are forwarded towards the target regions by selecting the fastest neighbor vehicles. Moreover, packets broadcasted from the vehicles at intersections are given priority to disseminate information on all roads across the intersection. We evaluate our approach through extensive and realistic simulations and results show that our geocast routing protocol shows better delivery ratio and improved end to end delay as compared to existing method.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a subclass of Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET). QoS routing protocols are fundamental part of VANETs that aim to provide services with guaranteed quality. Existing routing protocols of MANET can be applied to VANETs as well but they do not perform well under the dynamic conditions of VANETs such as, fast moving nodes and frequent disconnections in the network. In this paper we propose a novel QoS routing protocol for VANETs. The proposed scheme takes a localization approach by a road segment as a road between intersections. Every road segment can calculate candidate paths with QoS parameters, and vehicles on intersections serve as the gateway nodes to calculate the weights for the routes on local road segments and select reliable route based on these weights to connect the road segments. Our proposed scheme is designed to improve the delivery ratio and end to end delay with guaranteed quality in highly mobile VANET environments. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme performs better than AODV in aforementioned performance metrics.
