Abstract This article presents a methodological approach to the semantic description of architectural elements based both on theoretical reflections and research experiences. To develop this approach, a first process of extraction and formalization of architectural knowledge on the basis of the analysis of architectural treaties is proposed. Then, the identified features are used to produce a template shape library dedicated to buildings surveying. Finally, the problem of the overall model structuring and organization using semantic information is addressed for user handling purposes.

A solution is proposed for the management of multi-resolution vector data in a mobile spatial information visualization system. The client-server architecture and the models of data and transfer of the system are presented first. The aim of this system is to reduce data exchanged between client and server by reusing data already present on the client side. Then, an extension of this system to multi-resolution data is proposed. Our solution is based on the use of increments in a multi-scale database. A database architecture where data sets for different predefined scales are precomputed and stored on the server side is adopted. In this model, each object representing the same real world entities at different levels of detail has to be linked beforehand. Increments correspond to the difference between two datasets with different levels of detail. They are transmitted in order to increase (or decrease) the detail to the client upon request. They include generalization and refinement operators allowing transitions between the different levels. Finally, a framework suited to the transfer of multi-resolution data in a mobile context is presented. This allows reuse of data locally available at different levels of detail and, in this way, reduces the amount of data transferred between client and server. r

This paper builds on a body of European research on multiple resolution data bases (MRDBs), defining a conceptual framework for managing tasks in a multi-scale mapping project. The framework establishes a workload incorporating task difficulty, time to complete a task, required level of expertise, required resources, etc. Project managers must balance the workload among tasks with lower and higher complexity to produce a high quality cartographic product on time and within budget. We argue for increased emphasis on the role of symbol design, which often carries a lower workload than multi-scale mapping based primarily on geometry change. Countering expectations that combining symbol change with geometry change will increase workloads, we argue that in many cases, integration of the two can reduce workloads overall. To demonstrate our points, we describe two case studies drawn from a recent multi-scale mapping and database building project for Ada County, Idaho. We extend the concept of workload balancing, demonstrating that insertion of Level of Detail (LoD) datasets at intermediate scales can further reduce the workload. Previous work proposing LoDs has not reported empirical assessment, and we encourage small and large mapping organizations to contribute to such an effort.
