Global biogeography of marine tintinnids

Abstract: Literature records of tintinnid distributions (272 references, 1899 to 1992) were plotted with a computer. Distributions at the genus level revealed several distinct biogeographic patterns: cosmopolitan, neritic, warm-water, boreal, and austral. Some of the factors that may account for these patterns are examined. At the species level, certain disjunct distributions are examined, including the bipolar distribution of Acanthostornella norvegica and the interoceanic distributions of tropical tintinnids. Endemici… Show more

“…Tintinnids are an important component of the planktonic microprotozoan community in most marine environments (Landry and Hasset, 1982;Verity, 1987;Pierce and Turner, 1993;Cordeiro et al, 1997;Tillmann, 2004), and they can be important occasionally in estuarine waters (Sanders, 1987;Barría de Cao, 1992;Dolan and Gallegos, 2001;Urrutxurtu, 2004). In the São Sebastião Channel (São Paulo) under estuarine influence, tintinnids represented the most abundant group of the microzooplankton community (Eskinazi-Sant'Anna and Björnberg, 2006).…”

“…Station 3 had a high abundance of tintinnid ciliates. This is not surprising, for this station is just north of the Aleutian Island archipelago, and tintinnids are primarily a coastal microzooplankton group (Beers et al, 1980;Capriulo and Carpenter, 1983;Pierce and Turner, 1993). Fig.…”

“…Recent authors have reported aspects of their global distribution (Pierce and Turner, 1993), in the North Sea (Cordeiro et al, 1997), south-western Atlantic (Thompson et al, 1999), and the Mediterranean Sea (Dolan et al, 1999;Dolan, 2000;Pitta and Giannakourou, 2000;Pitta et al, 2001;Modigh et al, 2003).…”
