Gold Nanoparticle/Chitosan@N,S Co-doped Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Sensor: Fabrication, Characterization, and Electrochemical Detection of Catechol and Nitrite

Abstract: Given that catechol and nitrite can be easily released into the environment and cause serious damage to our physical and ecological environment, it is necessary to develop a fast and reliable detection method for catechol and nitrite analysis. In our work, an electrochemical catechol and nitrite sensor was created based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) deposited on chitosan@N,S co-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CS@N,S co-doped MWCNTS) composite modified glassy carbon electrode. The preliminary prepared compo… Show more

“…Studies show that the catalytic activity of AuNPs arises from their quantum scale, high surface-to-volume ratio and interface-dominated property, which is able to reduce the overpotential of electrochemical reactions and accelerate the chemical reaction, leading to the improvement of detection sensitivity. Typically, AuNPs are used to catalyze redox reactions such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), 4-nitrophenol, o-phenylenediamine (o-PD), catechol and nitrite [118,119,120].…”

“…Moreover, the ∆Ep value between anodic and cathodic peaks decreases when the concentration of MWCNT/AuNP increases, showing higher reversibility. However, for 40% of MWCNT/AuNP, two anodic peaks were observed, which was the key point to select this concentration for further experiments, the peak at 345 mV can be attributed to gold oxidation [27].…”

“…Catechol (CC) and Resorcinol (RC), two isomers of dihydroxybenzene, are easily introduced into environment owing to their extensive applications in cosmetics, pesticides, medicines, dyes, photography chemicals, flavoring agents . These two isomers are hazardous to the environment and human health due to difficult in degradation and high toxicity even at very low concentrations .…”
