Graft copolymerization of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone onto sodium carboxymethylcellulose with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator

Abstract: Graft copolymers of sodium carboxymethylcellulose with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone were prepared in aqueous solutions with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The graft copolymers [sodium carboxymethylcellulose-g-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)] were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The grafting parameters, including the graft yield of the graft copolymer and t… Show more

“…Similar graft copolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone has been reported by other researchers. 31,32 Yigitoglu et al 31 studied grafting of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone onto carboxymethyl cellulose with azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator, and the grafting yield increased steadily withincreasing monomer concentration.…”

“…"Grafting from" is commonly used, where synthetic polymer chains are grown from sites on the cellulose backbone. The cellulose backbone can be activated via a range of processes including single electron transfer 14 , hydrogen abstraction 15,16 , irradiation 17,18 or other methods 8,12,19 . From the resulting macro-initiator sites, polymer chains can be grown producing the graft copolymer.…”

“…Moreover, the graftcopolymers were found to have thermo-responsive behavior defined by an LCST of 65 °C, however, the graft density and length did not influence the LCST. Above the LCST, the micelles aggregated, resulting in an increase in R h to 180 nm and 120 nm for P(PEGMA) 27 -g-EC 0.2 and P(PEGMA) 185 -g-EC 0.02 respectively and solution turbidity, and these phenomena were shown to be reversible.…”
