Green technologies in sustainable urban planning

Abstract: The world is facing many environmental and economic problems resulting from rapid urbanization and over-exploitation of available resources as well as due to the dramatic increase of the population and corresponding increases in the number of cities. Technological and industrial development plays a big role in these problems. As a result, the term green technology became as a tool to solve these problems with an orientation towards sustainable development at all levels. , It seems to be very effective tool in … Show more

“…Due to the growth in the development of the construction industry, the negative impact on nature is increasing, especially for cities and large agglomerations [2]. Therefore, the approach to cities and settlements development, taking into account the concept of sustainable development, is most relevant specifically for the Arctic regions [3]. On the other hand, the construction of new and the operation of old buildings, taking into account the concept of "green" building, will increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Arctic territories [4].…”

“…This includes deliberate coordination of activities that are energy efficient and promote renewable energy, recycling activities, and more. There are different technologies that contribute towards sustainable urban planning, such as the implementation of enhanced municipal waste management (Laffta and Al-rawi 2018). Four types of eco-technologies that urban planners can start implementing more are:…”

“…Geographic Information Systems: collect, share, manipulate geographic data and incorporate with Urban Information Systems to guide design and development of land use and environmental plans 4. Communication Technology: software to transfer data and knowledge to different environments Green technologies are most prevalent and commercialized in Denmark, Sweden, Japan, India, Iraq, Finland, Canada, and the United States of America, just to name a few (Laffta and Al-rawi 2018). Opportunities for African planners to leapfrog are bountiful.…”

“…Urban planners seem to have the right intentions to protect the environment through designing cities and buildings. However, this has led to a contradictory outcome in which urban expansion has become unplanned, thus increasing carbon emissions and developing environmentally hazardous zones for residents [10]; [11]; [12]. Urban planners need to take more responsibility in realising their impact on the environment.…”
