Grid Supporting VSCs in Power Systems with Varying Inertia and Short-Circuit Capacity

Abstract: Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) can offer various control strategies to enable realization of the vision of a "Global Grid". With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, it is becoming more frequent for VSCs to be required to provide active and reactive power regulation. In this paper, a model of a grid-supporting VSC connected to a weak AC grid with low Short Circuit Capacity (SCC) and low inertia is presented. The impact of SCC and inertia is then illustrated by means of small-signal stabili… Show more

“…A SCR greater than 20 signifies that the stability requirements of the grid codes have been satisfied [10]. At a given point of a distribution system, SCC is proportional to the square of the system nominal voltage and inverse of the magnitude of system short circuit impedance (Z sc ) seen at this point [11]. Generally, the wind velocity is high at sites located far from the distribution substation.…”

“…In addition, the outer control loop is used to calculate the current reference i ‹ f P R 2 based on the mismatch between measured signals y s and prescribed setpoints u s " pp ‹ c , q ‹ c , ω ‹ s , V ‹ c q P R 4 . The most common PLL implementation is a so-called type-2 SRF PLL [25], which achieves synchronization by diminishing the q-component of the measured voltage v q f P R via PI control, thus aligning the d-axis of the Synchronously-rotating Reference Frame (SRF) with the output voltage vector v f [26]:…”

“…To analyse the effect of VSDR control on grid frequency, the grid equivalent is implemented according to the authors in [36, 37] and detailed below. Besides providing the voltage input to the PLL, the major purpose of grid equivalent is to capture the electromechanical dynamics of the centre‐of‐inertia frequency after a disturbance.…”
